Honor Flight "Mail Call"

Posted on Apr 4 2017 - 9:38pm

Honor Flight Southland takes off on May 5th and our Scouts have been invited to be a part of it by taking part in the Mail Call!    On the flight, "Mail Call" is held so that Veterans have the opportunity to receive letters of gratitude for their service. On active duty, before email, text or Skype, the very best part of the day was when letters from home were handed out.   Our Scouts can be a part of this tradition by sending a letter, card, or drawing to an Honor Flight Veteran.  Honor Flight Volunteers have shared that "Mail Call" is an emotional highlight of the trip. Many Veterans keep these letters in scrap books of their trip - to read over and over again. Let these Veterans know they are not forgotten!    Talk with your Scout about writing a card or letter.   Many Veterans like to write back to our Scouts, so if your unit would like to receive a response please have them include a return address!    Cards and letters must be turned in by the April 17th troop meeting in order to arrive prior to the Honor Flight in early May.    More information about the Honor Flight can be found here

Camporee - All Scouts Needed

Posted on Apr 4 2017 - 9:37pm

Scouts and Parents, Camporee is approaching fast!   Portola district is allowing troops to revise their headcount  by April 13.     Camporee is a fun-filled day of Scout Skills games.   The theme this year is "Space Wars" and will be held at Firestone Scout Reservation.   We will have a new camp area very close to the enterance of the Reservation.  Event Dates April 21st-23rd.    Sign your Scout up ASAP on the calendar section.   If your Scout has a sporting event, etc during the weekend, alternate plans for arrival/departure can be made.   Remember this one of the few events the Troop needs 100% participation.    During Spring Break, this would be an excellent time for your Scout to read their Scout book and practice their Scout Skills!

Camp Cards/Adventure Cards

Posted on Apr 4 2017 - 9:34pm
Camp Card Sales are going strong!  Each card sold can earn your Scout up to $4 in commission which goes into his Troop 99 Scout account which helps him pay his way through Scouting.   By selling just 15 cards, your Scout can earn a minimum of $45 to pay for Troop 99 activities.  Based on sales from last year this should only take about 2 hours, which pays him over $20 per hour.  Last year, Troop 99 had one Scout who sold 150 cards, and he was able to pay his own way to summer camp and had money left over in his account to pay for other Scouting activities.

The cards have a few differences this year which is a good thing:
·         The cards are not cards at all.  It is an app that you are selling access to.  Once the buyer creates their account and downloads the app for the Apple or Google Play Store, they have their discounts with them at all times.
·         You can use the app in any city (just update your location on the app)
·         Discounts in the app are constantly being added (and removed)
·         On the back of every card is an access code which allows the buyer of the card to download the app on their phone.

Where to sell the cards
·         In Front of Stater Bros. Market: Reservation Needed - Yorba Linda and Placentia stores, time has been reserved for Troop 99 (reach out to Mr. Mies for open times)
·         In Front of Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions: No Reservations Needed -  $5.00 off coupon with purchase of $50 or more
·         Door to door: Start with your neighbors
·         At Work: take your cards to your work, your co-workers want to help support your Scout

How to sell the cards:
·         Go out with an Adult.
·         Wear Class A uniform. You are representing yourself, Troop 99 and the BSA.
·         Practice your sales presentation before you go.
·         Have change ready.

How many cards your Scout sells is up to you and your Scout.  All we ask is for a minimum of 15 cards be sold.  If you want more cards reach out to Assistant Scout Master, Mr. Paul Mies (714-609-1314) and he will keep your Scout supplied with cards (request 24hr notice).

If you have any questions about the cards don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Mies.
