Rocket Launch / Campout - Updates

Posted on Jan 31 2017 - 10:34pm

While the forecast here in Orange County shows possible rain for Thursday and Friday, the forecast for Lucerne Valley Dry Lake bed appears free of rain at this point.   We will keep an eye on the weather, but it looks like we should be a-ok for this weekend.    That being said, this is winter in the high desert - weather is showing low 60's during the day, and 39 degrees at night.  It is important your Scout packs for cold weather, including appropriate jackets, long pants, and thermal/base layer.   Please also ensure your scout packs a sleeping bag rated for the weather (no 50 degree bags).   Boys' Life magazine has a great article about camping in cold weather (good reference for our upcoming snow camp as well):   http://boyslife.org/video-audio/34756/winter-camping-buying-guide/          Please also remember to check the rocket engine types needed to launch your rocket (rocket engines can be purchased at various stores, such as Hobby Lobby).   Please note, the troop has acquired quite a stockpile of model C6-5 engines, which should work for the majority of the rockets. The C6-5 engines are $2.50 per engine and can be purchased on the campout while supplies last. We also have a few assorted D and E engines, in very limited quantity.     As long as the weather holds, we're a "go" for liftoff - see you Saturday, 7a.m. at the Scout House, fully fueled (i.e. having had a good breakfast or bring one with you).

Thought of the Week - Poem "An Eagle Scout"

Posted on Jan 31 2017 - 9:39pm

A different sort is an Eagle Scout
He’s as good on the inside as the out.
True to his God an his nation’s flag
A boy whose loyalties never sag.
An upright boy with a heart of gold
He can take the heat and he can stand the cold.
An adventurous sort of rough, tough lad
He’d share with anyone, all that he had.
He’s cheerful and good, and he’s filled with fun
He always helps till the work is done.
No loafer is he, this young man with skill
With his disciplined heart and mind and will.
He camps and cooks, he hikes and climbs
He can sing a song or make a verse that rhymes.
You can trust an Eagle with all you own
You can count on him when the chips are down.
He’s a splendid youth with a lifetime goal
He’s the type of boy who’s in control.
A rare breed is this young Eagle Scout
Who’s as good on the inside as the out.
So honor the Eagle and model his deeds
He’ll plow rich soil and plant good seeds.
There’s no better young man in this great land,
Than an Eagle Scout with a helping hand!
